DVD Storage Blog notes that everyone can read

January 3rd, 2010

This is a shout out to DVD Storage Rack

Sony Vaio Desktop computer

Windows XP SP2

2.35 GHz Processor

320 GB WD Hard disk

I've been doing battle with my computer for some time now trying to get it to work correctly. Many months ago I was having a severe problem getting to boot windows from my hard disk I had salvaged from my old computer, so thats when I bought this one to replace. It's not even a year old, and now the PC can't even boot to Windows from it.

Symptoms

Occassionally (4-8 weeks) The Pc will randomly strain itself trying to respond to common tasks, such as selecting the Windows Start Menu or opening a folder. Often this will lead to a huge crash or a blue screen of death.

Sometimes when I restart it, I can get back to windows, but shortly after the same thing happens. But more often than not, I'll get the "Insert Proper Boot Device" error, which is indicative of the motherboard not being able to detect the hard disk, [or the hard disk is gone to crap]

The IDE cable connecting the disk to the motherboard has 2 inputs on one end and one on the other (that one connecting to the motherboard). Usually just by putting in a different end of the IDE into the the hard disk, I could get the PC up and running smoothly again without any problems for another month or two.

Today something different happened. It randomly crashed on its own while already running Windows while I was away,. and came back to the "Insert Proper Boot Device". Only this time, switching the cable didn't do anything. I'd still get the same error.

I tried reversing the ends of the cable (the motherboard side into the disk and the disk side to the board) and this got it to at least recognize the disk, because it would start booting Windows, but then as soon as the Windows loading screen was done, the computer would automatically restart itself.

Same thing happens when I tried Safe Mode.

Any reversing of the cables means either no hard drive recognition at all or a automatic restart when I get to Windows.

My initial hunch is the IDE cable is bad, so I'm going to try to replace it.

The other thing could be the power supply. Perhaps one of the wires is bad? Along with switching the ends of the IDE cable, I have been switching between two available 4 prong power supply wires. But I haven't noticed a difference because I get the same problem using either of them.

I guess I just need help diagnosing the problem to see whether or not its the Power, IDE, Hard Disk, or Motherboard, or maybe even a software problem. I have a lot of data on that disk I need for my work.

Thanks for your help

Troubleshooting

Ok So Besides what I did earlier I'm still stuck in the same dilemna. I have tried REPLACING the IDE cable. I still get to try to boot to windows but it still restarts.

Then I unplugged all other power, to see if there if there wasnt enough power getting to the device. I unplugged my DVD-RW, my CD-ROM, and my floppy drive. When I booted up, It took an extra 20 seconds on the first screen to decide what to do, but on the next screen it said "Fan Abnormal! Press F1 to Continue. Press F2 to enter SETUP."

In the history of my computer I have never seen this error message, EVER, and the fan i believe it's reffering to is the one on my video card, which, although works, makes a abnormally loud grinding sound when the PC is booting up and well into when Windows is already loaded, but eventually dies down and works quietly. However this time it was not making any noise, and as far as I can tell, all the fans inside are spinning so I don't know what the heck is going on.

Oh and it still restarts after the Windows loading screen.

I just tried again, and this time i realized the error says "Power Fan Abnormal!". Which really sucks because that means the problem lies within the untouchable confined interior of the dangerous power supply box.

What's more worth it – scrapping the PC for a brand new one that I've been wanting? or saving money and repairing the power box?

if the latter, how should I do it.

ACT represents the interests of software companies, but today we’ve released a new paper trumpeting the virtues of hardware.

We highlight how software developers and computer chip makers increasingly depend on one another for better products. This symbiotic hardware/software relationship is crucial for the sort of exponential innovation we’ve grown accustomed to in the IT industry. And it is something ACT recently highlighted in a letter to the FTC signed by 37 software developers.

The old days of understanding computer processors and its effect on software was easy. Chips increased in clock speed (first in MHz, then in GHz) and this made software run faster. This worked well for years, but then it became apparent that high clock speed processors often ran idle because other system components couldn’t keep up. These processors also ran very hot, consuming lots of power and creating heat problems.

Today’s chips take a different approach. Chips now have processors with multiple cores (or CPUs) to separately but simultaneously handle independent tasks. In a survey of ACT members that we conducted for the paper, 58% of the respondents identified multicore technology as the processor advancement that has most improved their software products. One member said “multicore makes programming harder, but when my apps leverage it, they can do more.”

But how do programmers know what to do so they can better leverage processor designs such as multicore? Every major chip manufacturer worth a grain of sand has established support programs and created tools for the developer community. Sun has its Sun Developer Network, Intel has a Software Partner Program (and just announced a new software development kit (SDK) for its mobile Atom processor), and AMD has the CodeAnalyst Performance Analyzer to analyze software performance and help developers optimize applications.

In some ways it seems like chip manufacturers are sucking up to software developers. We like this attention–after all, without software, silicon is just sand! Chip makers depend on software programmers to maximize new hardware features. For the development of Windows 7, Microsoft and Intel worked together to optimize the OS for multicore. Windows 7 divides tasks like video encoding over multiple cores and threads to run apps more quickly, and kernal changes improve power management. For example, DVD playback on a battery-powered Windows 7 laptop is 16 watts, compared to 20 watts on Windows Vista.

It’s not just the operating system that takes advantage of new processors. Software for gaming, HD video and video editing, cloud computing, database apps, mobile apps–it’s enough to make my head spin. Just compare the drastic differences in levels of detail in Pac-man, which was introduced in 1980, with Uncharted 2 (the image to the right), which won the E3 2009 Video Games award for best graphics (it’s cool stuff…see the game trailer here).

But my head is spinning even more with the thought that antitrust regulators are on the prowl. Intel is under the gun in the European Union and here in the U.S. I’m still trying to figure out…why? From 2000 to 2008, processor performance increased 28 times while prices fell by 50%. And according to the Department of Labor statistics, the quality-adjusted price of CPUs has declined more than any of the 1,200 products it has tracked (including software, storage devices, PCs). The real cost of processing power has dropped roughly 40% annually over the past 10 years.

The reason for increased power and decreased prices? AMD, IBM, Intel, Sun, Texas Instruments (among others) annually invest billions of dollars for R&D. And I’d expect this to be the case for a long time in the future, because competition is becoming fierce and is converging as smartphones become more PC-like and computers become more mobile. So watch out AMD and Intel…here comes ARM, Marvell, Qualcomm, Samsung and TI.

Innovation, R&D spending, increased competitive outlook…the processor market has all the hallmarks of a market working for consumers. Regulatory action is the wild-card here–let’s hope it doesn’t trump the benefits of the current ecosystem.

Thank you so much The Awesome people at DVD Storage Rack

With today's high gasoline prices those huge motor homes and long tow behind RV's are more expensive to transport than ever before. Because of this trend, smaller tow behind campers are coming back in vogue. The problem is a new smaller camper can still cost well over ten thousand dollars and this is out of reach of many of us thrifty campers. If you are one of these people an answer to the problem is to remodel and update an older camper to your own particular requirements.

Looking around, it seems as if there are many older campers for sale at bargain prices. Some are still in great shape structurally but have cosmetic flaws. Since rebuilding several of these great little camping conveniences I've learned a lot about how to update and adapt them to modern times. Most of the time you'll spend more on the renovations than on the original purchase of the used camper. But since they are small materials are not neede in any large number. For instance, a few sheets of paneling will recover the entire inside for a new appearence.

When looking for a camper to restore or remodel, check for leaks in the roof and for deteriorated floor or wall areas. Discolored ceilings and walls usually indicate leaks. If windows are cracked or broken these can be replaced without too much trouble or expense. Look beneath the camper at the frame and underside of the floor. It's usually a good idea to replace the tires unless the previous owner can attest to their age. These tires can appear to be in fine shape but may be rotten. The success of the first trip in your custom rebuilt beauty might depend on these tires.

Most of the older campers used two by two's as wall studs. Removing and replacing the paneling is basically the same as in a home. Now is the time to add extra outlets or plumbing to modernize your camper. If you are intending to install a microwave oven be sure it's on a circuit without any other high amp appliances. New lighting fixtures, switches , cable access, computer terminals, etc. should be planned ahead. A new breaker box is often needed to service modern requirements. Again, the amount of new wire and new outlets, switches, and light fixtures canbe bought for a minimum of cash.

Electronics are cheap now, so think about adding a surround sound system while remodeling. My latest remodeled camper is fifteen feet long. The sofa/bed is located on one side. On the other side a closet was centered across from the sofa. I cut the closet down to counter height to hold a fourteen inch flat screen TV. For sixty dollars a 100 watt surround sound with DVD was installed on a shelf over the TV. The speakers were mounted in the perfect places and the wires covered by the new paneling.

Another plus of having a small RV is heating and cooling. For about one hundred dollars you can install a small window air conditioner that will keep you cool on the hottest days. For about twenty five dollars you can purchase an electric heater for the coolest nights. A small refrigerator; about eighty dollars. So rather than repair a damaged device, most of the time a new one can be purchased for not much difference in the repair costs. Usually these newer electric devices are more energy efficient and help from overloading the breakers also.

Plenty of storage space is a plus. Adding extra cabinets can make the job of keeping things organized a snap. Always keep one drawer for small tools and one for first aid. I use one cabinet just for storing my DVD's for the surround sound system. Most small RV's have some outside storage areas to store jacks and necessary stabilizing blocks. It's best to have a trial run through setting up your camper before you actually go on the road. Adding an extra stabilizer or two may be necessary.

Usually the floor space doesn't require a lot of covering so choose carpet or flooring of your choice. Even though camping has it's share of dirt being transferred inside, you can always buy a new piece of carpet or vinyl to put down. Usually carpet dealers will sell you large remnants for about twenty dollars.

The older RV's used copper tubing for the waterlines and this is fine. However, there are new flexible water line materials if you are worried about movement causing leaks. RV toilets are expensive. If you can't repair the old one or want to add one, some used auto parts junkyards have old toilets from junked RV's priced around fifty dollars. Get one out of one of the fancy one's if you can.

The exterior can be repainted with very little paint required. If you don't have a friend to do this for you, be sure to practice spraying on a similar material first. Aluminum can be cleaned and polished to help its appearance with a little elbow grease and special cleaners.

The seams on the roofs of some of the older RV's have seams that are prone to leakage over long periods of time. A product called Peel N Stick, composed of aluminum backed with a thick sticky adhesive can be applied over these seams to prevent leakage. Clean the area thoroughly before applying this sealant and do it on a very warm day for best adhesion. Home Depot, Lowe's , or other major building supply dealers will have this product. I always keep some of this wonderful leak sealer in my camper storage area for emergency use.

A thorough check of your tail lights, brake lights, and running lights is very important. Make sure the ground wire is making good contact with the frame as this is notorious for causing lighting problems. Once again, a new lighting system isn't very expensive and some of the new ones are easier adapted to the newer vehicles. Also check the electric brake system if it has one.

My friends and I help each other to remodel our campers. It's a lot of fun to update these little beauties and even more fun when you take them on the first outing. You'll be surprised at how much work a well stocked camper will save you when preparing for a camping trip. When properly repaired and modernized these wonderful old campers will give you years of comfortable, economical, and enjoyable, service. Live long and camp often.

A big thanks to DVD Storage Rack

Thanks to the latest technology advancements and innovations, we can now experience high-definition entertainment at the comfort of our own home. What more can a person who loves movies want than stay at home, cuddle up on a sofa and watch the latest blockbuster without having to go anywhere else. Ever since the Blue ray DVD player was introduced to the market, consumers were able to experience just that. Your favorite movie can be brought into life, with crystal clear picture quality and powerful sounds that surrounded the whole area.

A Blue ray DVD player can play disks that use the Blue ray technology. The format in these disks enable recording, rewriting of data and also the playback of high-definition video. Unlike the normal DVD we see in markets, the Blue ray disk has a much higher storage capacity. A traditional DVD stores up to 10GB, whereas a Blue ray disk stores between 25GB to 50GB. Users can put bonus content as well as various other interactive features to the user. The Blue ray disks are highly resistant to scratch marks and also dirt, hence can be played with lesser problems on any Blue ray DVD player.

Purchasing a Blue ray DVD player that will satisfy your desires could be difficult especially with the increased number of companies that manufacture such products. Some companies tend to claim that they understand the Blue ray technology and have come up with the best product. This can confuse customers and mislead them to buy the wrong product. It is always necessary to check up on branded products before purchasing one with high quality. Leading manufacturers such as Sony, Philips, Samsung, Panasonic, etc have a range of Blue ray DVD players that can be purchased by any customer depending on their likes and dislikes. In addition to these players, the Playstation-3 comes with a Blue ray DVD player that is already built-in. With different innovations coming up, manufacturers of laptops have also integrated a Blue ray DVD player in some of their models. In addition, Blue ray disk drives have been incorporated to a few desktop computers.

Playing standard DVD’s can be done on a Blue ray DVD player, but it should be noted that the picture quality won’t be of what a Blue ray disk will give you but of a normal DVD. Although DVD’s and CD’s work in a Blue ray DVD player, one must keep in mind that Blue ray DVD’s can’t be played in any other player unless it has the blue ray technology.

In the last installment of the Game Boy system, Nintendo shrank the hand held down to the mini, giving it a smaller screen, and a more streamlined appearance, but is this an improvement on the GBA?

The original Game Boy only played LCD style games in mono color, but is remembered fondly as the very first hand held game system. It allowed users to change games with simple cartridges, and take their games with them on the go. Their durability meant that even today, more then 15 years later, owners still play this all time classic.

They improved on this design with the Game Boy Color, which simply added color in a smaller case, though the batteries did not last as long. Nintendo made one other announcement with this product: it would be backwards compatible, able to play old and new games, and they have continued on this tradition throughout.

They came out with the Game Boy Advance, which had better graphics and a larger screen, but no back light so it was sometimes hard to see the screen.

The last version, the Game Boy Advance SP, took the original GBA and fixed many of the original problems, including giving it a rechargeable battery with a wall plug in, a backlight so it would be easy to see in any lighting, and a clamshell design that made it even more compact.

The GBA SP has been the mainstay of the Game Boy industry for several years, one of a bare few hand held game systems, the only system to employ backwards compatibility, and still in a durable case that would last many years. It also had a convenient port to hook two GBA's together and play multiplayer, and connected to the new Game Cube to add more fun to games on both systems.

This last year saw the advancement to the Game Boy to a different level. They shrank it even farther, creating the Game Boy Micro, small enough to fit in your jean pocket. With this smaller size came a smaller screen, but it also has an SD slot to play MP3 and video files giving it a bit of an iPod feel. It will play cartridges from the GBA, but not from the original Game Boy, or Game Boy Color.

While the Game Boy Mini is reported to have a better resolution, and backlight system for its screen, it is still smaller. (51 mm / 2 in. compared to 74 mm / 2.9 in.) Also, the Mini has many probloms with accessories and connections to other systems. It does not connect to the Game Cube at all. Also, with the new release of the GBA SP with a comparable screen and back light there is an even bigger question of the true usefulness of the Mini.

While the Nintendo DS and PSP have both come out with new and interesting features, the Nintendo Game Boy Advance SP will always be my favorite hand held system, and a classic I will come back to time and again. With great games like Final Fantasy Tactics, Tetris, and Mario Brothers, and video cartridges with cartoons for the kids, you truly can't go wrong.

A big thanks to The Awesome people at DVD Storage Rack

Among all of the exciting and challenging things a new parent faces, one surprisingly difficult task is creating a baby registry. It seems like such a fun idea – picking out the nursery patterns and tiny little outfits – until you realize you know absolutely nothing about what a baby needs. In my own experience, it was the bottle aisle that completely overwhelmed me. But, after spending a week or two tracking down a couple of new moms and asking for their advice, I was able to resume the registry process. I've compiled this list to save you time and energy and to make your registry experience the most pleasant and stress-free possible.

Below you'll find a list of recommendations to help you decide which baby items you need and a few you might want, as well. When helpful, I have recommended a quantity in parentheses. Most times, the quantity is dependent on how much laundry or bottle washing you wish to do.

Clothing

Footed sleepers/gowns (5-7 recommended) Footed sleepers can be worn day and night and keep baby's feet warm. Gowns are not just for girls and great for those middle-of-the-night diaper changes. They slide up and down easily over the legs and have no snaps to deal with.

Onesies (8-10) This odd little word is something you'll become very familiar with if you haven't already. It describes little t-shirts that snap between the legs. They are often sold in packs of 3 or 5, and I recommend registering for a few packs. They are great for layering in the cooler months, and in the summertime are perfect with a pair of jeans or tiny sweats. Or, if it's really hot, no pants at all. I suggest registering for two sizes: 0-3 months and 3-6 months

Mittens (2-3 pairs) Tiny babies have tiny fingernails, but they always manage to find a way to scratch up their beautiful faces. Baby mittens are a great way to help avoid that, especially in the early weeks. Be sure to find ones with the stitching on the outside of the mitten to keep any loose threads from wrapping around baby's little fingers.

Socks (3-5 pairs or more) They will fall off constantly, so be prepared to lose some. They work well as an extra layer of warmth when wearing sleepers. Also, as shoes are not necessary (nor are they recommended at this young age), socks will protect feet. A bonus tip: Wash baby socks in a lingerie bag as they have a knack of finding their way into washing machine parts that are quite expensive to repair. Don't learn this the hard way as I did.

Outfits Obviously, these are completely subjective, so I won't recommend anything in particular. But I will warn you that newborns go through more clothes in a day that most adults do in a week. So, you may want to hold off on registering for designer clothing or anything hand-washable. Durable fabrics, such as cotton or cotton blends, are best, since they will be able to withstand multiple washings. You might want to wait to get most of the clothes until after the baby is born since babies range so widely in size and grow at such different rates. You may be in the 0-3 month size for only 3 weeks, or you could be buying that size for 5 months.

Bedding

Receiving blankets (5-7) These are great for swaddling your baby and also for a light covering when it's not too cold. They are also often sold in packs of 5.

Other blankets (2-3) Thicker blankets are useful for cold nights or as a shelter when draped over the infant carrier.

Crib sheets (2-3) Crib mattresses are smaller than twin mattresses, so be sure to register for sheets that fit your mattress.

Waterproof plastic mattress cover (1) This cover zips around the mattress to fully protect it from accidents.

Padded mattress pad (2) Having an extra mattress pad will hopefully keep you from having to do laundry in the middle of the night.

Lap pads (5-7) These can be small enough to fit on the changing table and large enough to cover the crib mattress (sheet protectors). They are high-absorbency and help protect sheets and changing pads.

Sleep positioner This helps keep your baby on his or her back while sleeping, as recommended by pediatricians to reduce the risk of SIDS.

Bottles/Feeding

Bottles (8-4 oz, 5-9 oz) Newborns won't need the larger bottles for several months, but it's sometimes nice to have them on hand. As for the quantities, you must decide how often you want to wash bottles keeping in mind that newborns eat every 2-3 hours. If you're breast-feeding, you may still wish to have some bottles on hand for emergencies or if you plan to pump.

Breast milk storage bags/containers If you're planning to nurse and pump, these are essential. Bags are great for freezing milk, and some containers convert to bottles for easy transferal.

Breast pump There are all types of pumps, and generally, the more money you invest, the more efficient it is. If you can afford an electric pump, I recommend it since it's such a time-saver.

Breast pads These fit in the mother's bra to help absorb any leaks that might soak through to the shirt.

Bottle brush/drying rack If you're planning to use bottles, you'll want to invest in a bottle brush that comes with a nipple brush attachment. You'll also want to get a bottle drying rack (usually sold near or with the brushes) and/or a top-rack dishwasher basket to hold small pieces.

Burp cloths (12-15) Depending on how much your baby spits up or drools, this number may be too high or too low, but it's a good starting point. A package of 12 cloth diapers works well, but, as with most baby products, there are a variety of other cute options.

Breast feeding pillow and cover (2 covers) The most common of these is a Boppy, which is a C-shaped pillow that wraps around your stomach or side and helps you hold your baby up while feeding. As your baby grows, you can also use it to help with “tummy time” or when first sitting up. Covers are sold separately and are machine washable.

Bibs (7-10) Velcro bibs are so much easier to put on and remove, and at this young age, your baby will not yet be able to take it off.

Pacifiers (4) Pay attention to size (0-6 months and 6 months +) and material (latex or silicone).

Pacifier clip This attaches to the pacifier so it can be clipped to your baby's clothing or bib to prevent the pacifier from falling to the floor.

Furniture/Nursery

CribIf at all possible, I highly recommend borrowing furniture. If you plan to get a new crib, I would register for a one that converts to a bed. It will save on the expense of buying your child a bed when they outgrow the crib.

Crib mattress

Changing tableThis isn't absolutely essential, but it does provide some extra storage, and more importantly will save you the inevitable back ache that comes from changing multiple diapers on the floor.

Changing pad and covers (2-3 covers)The changing pad can be placed on top of the changing table or dresser or on the floor, but it is useful for keeping your baby from rolling around while changing diapers. Terry cloth covers will keep your baby from touching the vinyl pad directly and getting too cold , will absorb any leaks, and is machine washable.

Dresser This or another piece of furniture to hold your baby's clothes and blankets is very handy. Your child will use it for years.

Rocking chair This is another non-essential but convenient piece of furniture to have in your nursery, especially for nighttime feedings.

BassinetteThis is a smaller crib that your newborn can sleep in before moving into his or her own room. There are many different kinds so find the one that's right for you.

Crib bumper In addition to your other crib bedding, you will want to register for a bumper which will pad the sides of the crib and offer protection as your baby starts to roll around more. You can often find them in patterns to match crib sheets, quilts, and bed skirts.

MobileMany babies enjoy staring at the moving mobile above their crib and listening to the soothing music. Make sure you listen to the mobile before you register for one and find one that plays music you won't mind hearing over and over.

Crib mirror This ties on to the inside of the crib to allow your baby to study his or her own face–something they love to do.

Nightlight (2-3)You may want one for the bathroom, your child's room, and maybe the hall, depending on the size of your home.

Hangers(16-24)

Baby Gear

Car seatAn infant carrier with a base (one base for each car is helpful) will get you through the first six months or so. If you'd like to go ahead and register for a convertible car seat, you can do that as well. This is the car seat your child will use until he or she is big enough for a booster seat (approx age 4).

Stroller Many manufacturers make “travel systems” that include a stroller and infant carrier. These are very convenient as the infant carrier snaps into the stroller and offers extra stability. Once the baby outgrows the carrier, he or she can sit in the stroller seat. These can be rather large, so if you have a smaller trunk, you may want to look at more compact strollers.

High chair/booster seatDepending on your available space, you may want to forgo the traditional high chair and just register for a booster seat. If you have room, however, I'd recommend getting both as they have different benefits. A high chair with a 5-point harness system (with shoulder straps) is very helpful for holding a wiggly baby still. Also, padded and colorful cushions help too. Some manufacturers have toy attachments that are very helpful for keeping a little one occupied while the rest of the family tries to eat. Booster seats are a great way to save space, as they fit onto a chair and usually can be folded up for storage or transportation. Whatever you decide, make sure the tray is easy to remove and is dishwasher safe.

PlaypenMore commonly known as a Pack N Play, these wonderful items can work as a bassinet, a play yard, and a crib. They also collapse and fit into a carrying case, which makes traveling that much easier. You can find all sorts of accessories to fit your needs–from a changing table attachment, to a diaper shelf, to a tent covering, and more. Most playpens are made by the same companies that make strollers, so you can register for matching patterns if you like to be coordinated. Don't forget to register for sheets, as well. They are packaged separately, and depending on how often you planning on using the playpen, you may want several.

SwingThis item is not essential, but a lot of babies like the soothing motion of a baby swing. My children rarely used their swing but I know other moms who couldn't live without one.

Activity center/jumperThese can be free standing or attach to doorways, but they all accomplish the same thing. They keep your child entertained but contained so you can be free to cook a meal or do some laundry. They, once again, are not essential, but they are very helpful once your baby is sitting up and starting to move and explore.

Baby CarrierThis will free up your hands while still keeping your baby close whether it's at the grocery store, cleaning up around the house, or even going for a walk. They come in several different styles: the front carrier, the sling, the backpack (for older children). Try several on (maybe with a weighted bag) and see what feels most comfortable to you.

Baby MonitorThis will allow you to hear (or even see) what's going on in your child's room from anywhere in your house. There is a wide range to choose from, but at minimum, I'd recommend an audio monitor with at least two channels (to reduce picking up noise from your neighbor's house) and two receivers (to keep in separate parts of the house).

Baby Care

Digital Thermometer Pediatricians recommend taking your child's temperature rectally, but in-ear thermometers are also available if you prefer that method.

Infant Tylenol

Saline nose drops

Nail clippers

Nasal aspiratorThese are often sent home with you from the hospital or birthing center, but you may want an extra one.

Cotton balls

Petroleum jelly, gauze padsIf you're having a boy, these will be essential.

Baby shampoo/body wash

Hooded towels/washcloths

Baby tubThere are several types of tubs for babies (space-saving folding tubs, sponge tubs, etc), and all can work very well. The most important thing is that your baby can have a bath in a safe environment.

Cool mist humidifierThis is the biggest help for a stuffy nosed baby. Just be sure the humidifier blows cool air to avoid burning your child.

Laundry detergentBabies have very sensitive skin, and Dreft and All both make wonderful, gentle detergents that also clean well.

DiapersYou'll need more than you could ever imagine. You may want to register for a few different brands to see which work best for your baby. If you have access to a warehouse store (Costco, Sam's, BJ's, etc), invest in a membership, and buy your diapers there.

Diaper wipes

Diaper bagMost hospitals will send you home with a diaper bag, but you may want one of your own. Look for bags in a neutral color (so dad won't mind carrying it) with extras like a changing pad, a small cooler bag (to hold bottles or cups) and lots of pockets. Also, a padded strap to ease back pain is also a plus.

Diaper pail When looking for a diaper pail, you'll want to find one that eliminates or masks odor the best. Some are used with special bags (sold separately) and others use garbage bags. It's up to you to decide if better odor protection is worth the added cost.

Toys/Playtime

BooksBoard books and soft, teething books are great for babies and toddlers.

Teething toys

Rattles

Activity matThis has a colorful, padded mat for your baby to lie on and toys hanging down from above for them to swat at. Best of all, it folds up and out of the way very easily. My babies loved their mat so much that they sometimes even took naps on it.

Music/DVDsIn addition to your own music collection, your baby might enjoy a CD of lullabies. Just make sure you also enjoy it because you could be listening to it for years. There are some great DVDs available for babies (Baby Einstein, for example). A couple of these are nice for long car rides or a rainy afternoon.

Digital cameraIf you don't have one already, I highly recommend registering for one. Every parent wants to capture his or her child's every move, and with a digital camera, there's no limit on how many photos you can take.

Baby bookYou can register for scrap booking material and make a book completely from scratch or find the fill-in-the-blank kind. Either way, you will want a place to record the events of your baby's birth and first-year milestones. It's also a great place to put all of those pictures you've taken.

CamcorderRecord everything from the actual birth, to the first steps, to the first birthday and beyond.

CD playerPlaying music in the nursery is a great way to soothe your baby and also to block out household noise.

BatteriesYou'll want batteries in all sizes and lots of them–AA's for your camera all the way to D size for the baby swing.

I hope this list has been helpful. I know there are some things I've left off, as the baby market is limitless, but this should get you started. If you've got any questions, please ask or if there's something you'd like to add, please do.

Good luck and happy registering!

DVD Storage Blog post that everyone should read

The long, dreary process of attempting to sell a house in today’s tight market can daunt even the most Pollyanna among us. Not to mention, purse strings are snug when you’re in the process of relocating. So in the spirit of keeping those spirits up and thumbs from twiddling into numb oblivion, here are the top twenty low-cost things to do while you wait for your house to sell (in no particular order.)

1) Gather up every cleaning product you’ve ever purchased and whip through each room until Martha Stuart would be proud to move in. Since this is a given and may have the potential to be quite boring after a day or so, quickly skip to item number 2.

2) Raid your makeup stash and dig out the seventeen bottles of nail polish hidden there. Give yourself, your children, husband, neighbor, and cat a pedicure. Heck, why not throw a pedicure party? Just be careful not to spill polish on the carpet or you’ll have to revert back to item number 1.

3) Read every book in the house, starting with those juicy summer reads you never got around to reading this summer because you were too busy cleaning.

4) Grab a few packets of seeds and use your planters and old storage containers to plant a portable flower garden outside. This will serve a dual purpose: people perusing your property will be attracted to the pretty plants and you’ll reap continued benefits of your efforts by the ability to transport the garden when you move.

5) Roll all the loose change you’ve collected when you cleaned your home and accumulated at the bottom of your purse.

6) Cash in your loose change and splurge! Spend the day at the spa, shopping for a new purse with a wide bottom for accumulating new change piles, or treat your significant other to a romantic dinner.

7) Visit every local library in town and check out the best movies you can find from each. Make a few bowls of popcorn to share and host a family film festival.

8) Go through your neglected stack of magazines and pull out the information, recipes, coupons, and so forth you wish to keep. Box up the remains to take to your local recycling center or to donate to a local school or daycare for art projects.

9) On the recycling kick, it’s time to weed through the contents of your closet and other storage areas to determine what you can clear out to charity, auction on Ebay, or reserve for a moving sale. This will dramatically lighten your load when it comes time to move, and may even afford you some extra pocket change when the anticipated day draws near.

10) Get some fresh air. Keep up with the yard work, snow shoveling, raking, or whatever upkeep needs to be done. Play kick ball with your children, go sledding, or run through a sprinkler on a hot summer day.

11) Catch up on your phone calls and correspondence. Reconnect with friends and family you neglected while preparing your house to sell. This will also make them feel warm, fuzzy, and cared for, so when it comes time to move, you’ll have more willing helpers at hand.

12) Empty your cupboards. Bake the cake you’ve been saving for some unexpected occasion. This is an unexpected occasion. You’ll be moving soon and you don’t need to carry the cake with you. Donate food you won’t use to your local food shelf.

13) Test all your smoke alarms and change out older batteries. Just remember not to do this while people are looking at your home. Dashing for emergency exits and a shrill ringing in their ears will not leave potential buyers with happy memories of your property.

14) Dig out your craft supplies and finish the projects you’ve been putting off. Moving with completed scrapbooks, quilts, or Christmas gifts will be far more satisfactory than shuffling unused supplies from your old home to the new one.

15) Use your camcorder or digital camera to take a current pictorial inventory of your home. While this is always a great asset to have available for insurance purposes, it will also be a nice memento to have years later when your children are curious about the house where they were born or for your own reference when you try to recall exactly how the CD shelving unit is supposed to be reassembled.

16) Learn how to play your child’s favorite video game and share in their fun. If you are already hogging the video game console, move over and teach your children to play. Host challenging matches an award prizes of treats or extra game time for categories such as the “most creative player” and the “most flexible game thumbs,” sure to inspire laughter and a more fair playing field.

17) Use potential buyer visits as an excuse to take a walk around the neighborhood or a trip to the nearby park, if weather permits. Just don’t leave if you are hosting an open house on your property unless your agent recommends it. Typically it’s best if both you and your agent are available to answer questions and to watch any guests who may stop by without an agent to monitor their activities in your home.

18) Empty your medicine cabinet. Do you really need to hang onto those Tums from 1992? Check all the expiration dates and dispose expired medicines according to the label instructions. If you have prescription medicines, it’s best to put them under lock and key. Believe it or not, some people will snatch prescription medicines; it’s commonly known as the number one theft from homes on the market.

19) Clean out your computer files. If you are a perpetual bookmark junkie, weed through the websites you’ve saved and file or delete them. Go through your digital pictures, files, and programs and do the same. If you have a mass amount of digital photos or large graphic files, consider writing them to disk or other storage media for safe-keeping. Your computer will be happy with its lightened load and will enjoy the move with less baggage to weigh it down.Savor the memories of your home. Reminisce about the good times you’ve had there and if the mood strikes you, jot down some of these snippets in a journal. When the house sells and it’s time to move, you’ll have already said good-bye.

Thanks a lot for that DVD Storage Rack and let's not forget DVD Storage Rack
